The population of the Dominican Republic is 11 million. 57% of the population is Roman Catholic, unfortunately nearly half of those who call themselves Catholic are not active in their faith. Only 9% of the population identifies as evangelical Christian.
Church resources are a constant battle.Evangelicals generally work out of a context of poverty, which usually cultivates a receiving-only attitude and a relationship of dependency on foreign organizations. Many current and potential spiritual leaders leave the country for the economic improvements of life in the USA or Puerto Rico. Pray for endurance, provision and faithfulness to those called to minister, especially those serving in the poorer, rural areas.
The Dominican Republic is a new country partner of World Link Ministries but we’re already seeing God do amazing work. In the two and a half years we’ve served here, we’ve held three trainings in Barahona and one in Santa Domingo and La Romana. We have launched 160 church plants with each church averaging 150 members.
We are not financially supporting the church planters in the Dominican Republic because we’re seeing the churches faithfully supporting their pastors vision to saturate the nation with the Gospel and continue their call to plant churches.
